What is Japanese horror? And why is it a genre of it's own?
Japanese horror has its foundation set on an entirely different array of cultural values and traditions. The Shinto religion maintains that everything is possessed by a spirit, which sets the stage for LOTS of spirits all over the place. Also important to the theme of Buddhism that, because of karma, everything you do comes back to you, and there are curses everywhere!

Japanese horror traditionally has a much slower and gradual build up, and the effects are usually more psychological, thoughthat's not to say that Japanese horror doesn't feature a wide variety of ghosts and spirits! In 'American' horror, we begin the action within minutes of the start of the film. But, watching something like Ju-On or Audition, it's much more of a anticipation that keeps us on the edges of our seat. And, when the action happens, we're not left disappointed.
